Need sink shower aerator – used 7,000 gallons of water this month – ars technica openforum

So our bill came and we used exactly 7,000 gallons of water this month at our new place.

I’m pretty sure that our showers and sinks don’t have any in place.

Any advice on that? Can I get ones that I just screw in with my existing shower heads? Ones that attach to the kitchen and bathroom sinks?

Also they read our water monthly, I wonder if I am being charged a meter reading fee each month, if so maybe I can get them to switch to every 3 months or something.

Do those little screens work, can I just slip that in between my existing heads and the pipe?

Most likely they cannot switch as the utility does it on a set schedule.

You are looking for “water restrictors” or “water savers” instead of an aerator. The kitchen sink st louis All an aerator does is mix air into the flow to even out the stream instead of having it come out unevenly and splatter everything.

You could look into one of those ‘water saver’ things, but in my experience these things don’t really save you a whole lot of water. Everything and the kitchen sink I think you might be better off finding out why you used such a huge amount of water in the first place.

My home has a built in lawn sprinkler but we have never turned it on to use it (moved in just two months ago).

How would I check that for leaks? Have to call someone I imagine?

I’ll look around for a master water valve JUST for that, perhaps there is a kill switch I can turn there, just to rule that out.

I also imagine I could turn off all my faucets, make sure no water is running then go outside and look at the water meter? See if it still turns, ever so slowly?

There isn’t a nifty magic device I can just insert between the shower head and water pipe?

Looked at the kitchen and bathroom faucet, they are both Moen 2.2 GPM, so those are already low flow from what Google tells me.

The shower heads though do not have anything listed, so I really don’t know.

I suppose I could run one for 15 seconds into a large cooking pot.

Then drain that out into a measuring cup to measure and work the math to a gallon per minute amount.

I assume gallons per minute really means x gallons of water comes out each minute?
