Exactly a week before the calendar turns to spring, Cape Ann residents are confronting a heavy dose of winter.

The National Weather Service has issued both winter storm and blizzard warnings covering much of the day Tuesday, with forecasts calling from anywhere from 8 to 16 inches of snow, and wind gusts of 60 miles per hour and potential coastal flooding.

With high temperatures Tuesday predicted to hit 34, the storm brings a potential for heavy snow and power outages.

“Even at 8-12 inches of snow, it’s going to be a wet, heavy snow — the kind that brings down trees and power lines,” Peter Lovasco, weatherman, said Monday.

“It’s really a tricky storm to predict,” he said, noting that forecasting models early Monday showed the storm — and snow accumulation totals of up to 2 feet — tracking westward to Central Massachusetts and beyond.
